Mandibular Fractures

Mandibular Fractures

Mandibular fractures occur as a result of accidents or trauma. In such a situation, a patient must consult a maxillofacial surgeon immediately. Treatment of mandibular fractures is possible.

The following are the main symptoms of mandibular fractures:

  • Pain on the face or jaw,
  • Inability to open the mouth or chew food,
  • Bruising and swelling on the face,
  • Difficulty in moving the jaw,
  • Facial numbness.

Do Mandibular Fractures Occur As A Result Of Trauma?

Generally mandibular fractures occur due to trauma. In addition, they can also occur as a result of accidents or large cysts formed in the mandible.

Is Mandibular Fracture Treatment Performed with Dental Mini Plate Method or Are There Different Methods?

Generally, patients who suffer from mandibular fracture can be treated with dental mini plate method. A mandibular fracture may require different interventions depending on the extent of the damage, if it is a small fracture, intermaxillary fixation (IMF) method can be performed.

How Long Does It Take A Mandibular Fracture To Heal?

Treatment of mandibular fracture varies depending on the characteristics of the person (age, health status, etc.), in which bone region the fracture is and how many parts the fracture has. In general, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks.

Although the healing process changes depending on the size of the fracture, the treatment and the damage, it can take an average of 6 to 8 weeks. Full healing process can take up to 6 months.

What Happens When A Mandibular Fracture Is Not Treated?

Mandible fractures can cause facial deformities; lower and upper mandible fractures can cause bite problems and speech disorders if left untreated. Improper bone union, joint problems in the mandible and a decrease in joint movements may occur. Inflammation can occur in the area exposed to trauma which can trigger a highly dangerous process.

How Should First Aid Be Provided To A Patient With A Jaw Fracture?

As soon as it is established that a patient has a mandibular fracture, he/she should not open and close his/her mouth too much. It is necessary to go to a healthcare institution immediately. Mandibular fracture treatments are performed in the conditions of operating room by an anaesthetist and oral, dental and maxillofacial surgeon while patient is under general anesthesia or sedation anesthesia.
